Smart meters emit dangerous radiation which can harm humans and animals

The health and safety of our customers comes first, so we know how important it is to debunk this myth.

Smart meters use radio waves to communicate. While radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, they are not dangerous to humans or animals. Additionally, the level of exposure is lower than from other everyday devices, such as smart phones or home broadband equipment.

Public Health England (PHE) has also carried out independent assessments of smart meters to establish whether they can cause health issues. The results were published in March 2017 and were peer reviewed. “Peer reviewed” means that the research has been reviewed by other independent experts, so you can be sure of the findings.

You can read more here about the PHE assessment and its findings.

Smart Energy GB is a government-backed body which helps to make clear the benefits of smart meters for the UK. They’ve also produced a short video which explains the findings of the PHE study:

As well as keeping your personal data secure, smart meters are perfectly safe. They’re also helping the UK to reach its 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goals, providing the backbone of the smart grid.

Right now, we know that health and safety are more important than ever. That’s why we’ve committed to new safety measures during smart meter installation appointments, to help protect our partners, staff and customers.
